Where can I get a pregnancy test?

• your GP (although not in some areas)
• your local family planning clinic
• your chemist (at a cost)
• at Choices Crisis Pregnancy Centre (for free)

When can a test be done?

The earliest a pregnancy test can be done is on the first day of a missed period. You will need an early morning sample of urine which will have the highest concentration of the pregnancy hormone (HcG) if it is present. Collect the urine in a clean container.

Alternatively specimen bottles are available from chemists.

Can I do a test at home?

Yes. These tests are available from chemists. It is very important to read the instructions and follow them carefully. If in doubt about your result, have your test confirmed at your local crisis pregnancy centre.

If I have a test done at Choices crisis pregnancy centre, will anyone be told about the result?

Your result will be given to you verbally and you will be shown the test stick to confirm the result for yourself. No-one else will be informed as it is a confidential service but if the result is positive we would suggest that you consult your GP.

If I am unhappy with my result, will I have the opportunity to talk about it with someone?

At Choices, the counsellor who does your test will be available for as long as you need to talk about your result and discuss your options with you.
